How to Select a Scope for Your Air Rifle
Buying a scope for an air rifle sounds easy until you actually try to do it.
Then suddenly you’re staring at numbers, tube sizes, reticles, parallax settings, objective lenses, mounts, and product descriptions that all claim to be “crystal clear” and “tactical,” even if the scope looks like it came free with a flashlight.
The truth is, picking the right air rifle scope does not have to be painful. You just need to match the scope to your rifle and the kind of shooting you actually do.
Not the kind of shooting you imagine yourself doing in slow motion with dramatic music. The real kind. The backyard, bench, field, plinking, pest-control, target-shooting kind.
Let’s talk about how to choose wisely.
First, What Kind of Air Rifle Do You Have?
This matters more than people think.
If you have a PCP or CO₂ rifle, life is easier. These rifles have very little recoil, so they are gentle on scopes. Most decent scopes can handle them, assuming the scope focuses at airgun distances.
If you have a spring-piston or gas-ram air rifle, things get more serious.
Springers and gas-rams have a strange recoil pattern. The gun moves backward and forward during the shot cycle. That two-way recoil can destroy scopes that were not built for it.
Yes, even scopes that survive on firearms.
A springer can kill a cheap scope like it owes money.
So if you shoot a spring-piston or gas-ram rifle, make sure your scope is airgun-rated or specifically rated for spring-piston use.
Magnification: Don’t Overdo It

Many firearm scopes are set for longer distances, often around 100 yards. Air rifle shooters often shoot much closer — sometimes 10, 20, or 30 yards.
That means a regular firearm scope may look blurry or behave badly at airgun ranges.
For air rifles, look for a scope with:
- Adjustable objective, also called AO
- Side focus
- Close-focus ability
- Parallax adjustment down to around 10 yards or less

It is easy to get excited about big scopes. High magnification, huge objective lens, giant turrets — it all looks impressive.
But air rifles are often lighter than firearms. A huge scope can ruin the balance.
If you carry your rifle in the field, choose something compact and practical. If you shoot from a bench, weight matters less.
The best scope is not always the biggest or most expensive. It is the one that fits your rifle and your shooting.
